Common Foods That May Suppress Thyroid Function in You and Your Pet

Posted on August 20th, 2015

There is an entire family of commonly eaten foods that will suppress the thyroid production of its important hormones that are vitally necessary to regulate the metabolism of the entire body.

This family of foods is referred to as goitrogenic.

This means, they can interfere with the uptake and use of iodine causing an enlarged thyroid. This thyroid enlargement is called a goiter.

This family of food, when eaten raw can lead to a state of hypothyroidism in both you and your pet.

Once these foods are cooked, it destroys their goitrogenic properties.

Please make sure that any of the foods occurring on the following list are cooked and if you are feeding raw foods to your pet, make sure any of the following foods contained in that raw pet food are cooked.

Obviously there are a number of raw fruits and vegetables that still can be used to supply all those important nutrients that remain viable in an uncooked diet.

The following is a list of goitrogenic foods that should not be eaten or fed raw to either yourself or your pet especially if either one of you already suffers from a state of hypothyroidism.

This list of goitrogenic foods was prepared by Wikipedia.

Vegetables in the genus Brassica:

  • Bok choy
  • Broccoli
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage
  • Canola
  • Cauliflower
  • Chinese cabbage
  • Collard greens
  • Horseradish
  • Kai-lan (Chinese broccoli)
  • Kale
  • Mustard greens
  • Radishes
  • Rapeseed
  • Rapini
  • Rutabagas
  • Turnips

Hopefully this list of goitrogenic foods will help you and your pet avoid an induced state of hypothyroidism based upon eating certain raw vegetables.

These are just some of my thoughts.
